25 November 2016, 11:08 pmKen AshbyStrange game this one. Not sure how Shredder will see this but for me it felt like a lesson in how things can so quickly change. Alas, this time it worked out for me. Come the tea break (following black's 19th move) while I was a pawn up, Toby seemed to have gained positional compensation. Frankly, at this stage it felt to me he was in the driving seat. Well, I'd certainly rather have been in his position than mine! It's not as if white's progress is difficult to see. However, his 23rd move (g4) made little sense. Why he didn't go for placing a rook on the g file I simply don't know. Moreover, not only does white's advanced g pawn block one of his rook's dominating the file, it also unnecessarily exposes his king. For the first time, I could see a way through and from this point on (unlike what had preceded it) he played to his rating and I played to mine. Nine moves later, the mate came.
